WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old healing technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture is based on the principal that the body's life force or vital energy  (qi) circulates along meridians or pathways of energy. If the flow of energy gets blocked, the disruption can lead to imbalance, pain, lack of function, or illness. Acupuncture therapy can release blocked qi in the body, improve the body’s functions and promote the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites--commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or acupoints. Each meridian corresponds to a specific organ such as the lungs, the heart, the kidneys, the spleen, the liver, etc. Stimulating the body’s tissues with acupuncture needles activates neurological, endocrine, muscular, and immunological mechanisms. The selection of points determines whether the outcome will ease pain, reduce blood pressure, stimulate an ovulation or reverse skin conditions. Acupuncture is a holistic, 'whole-body-wellness' approach to health, as it works on the physical as well as the emotional self.

DOES IT HURT?

Most patients find acupuncture relaxing and soothing and some even fall asleep during treatments.  While there can be a sensation with the superficial insertion of acupuncture needles it is not described as pain.  Acupuncture needles are very fine and are inserted just underneath the skin so that with the very quick insertion they are hardly felt at all.

WHEN WILL I FEEL RESULTS?

This varies greatly from person to person, but the majority of our patients feel a sense of relief and calmness almost immediately. For injuries and pain reduction, it can take 3-5 sessions to see marked improvement, but often times range of motion and swelling are improved more quickly. For emotional or sleep issues, it varies again but most often patients feel a sense of calmness and relaxation quickly. After our personal consultation, you will have a better idea of when you’ll see and feel results.
